Cape Clear Gaeltacht island is situated 15 kilometres west of Baltimore, Co Cork
A summer college of Irish for boys and girls between the ages of 11 and 18.

Three courses will be held:

a)  6 – 28 Meitheamh (June) 2016 = €900 (Booked Out)

b) 29 Meitheamh (June) – 21 Iúil (July) 2016 = €900

c) 22 Iúil (July) – 6 Lúnasa (August) 2016 = €725

Special emphasis will be placed on developing oral and communication skills.

Placed as it is, the most southern inhabited land in the country, 15 kilometres (9 miles) out in the Atlantic, the island provides the ideal location for holidays and education for boys and girls, who enjoy fresh air, mild climate, open country, sea, games and swimming. There is a ferry service from Baltimore three times daily in both directions during the summer months.

Education

Special attention is placed on assisting each student acquire fluency in Irish. Emphasis will be placed on the spoken language, on developing oral and communication skills and learning through enjoyment and active participation. This will benefit students with all aspects of their course and more especially with the Department Irish Language Examinations – Oral(40%) and Aural (10%).

Experienced and highly qualified teachers are employed. Cinnirí will supervise the students and take charge of games etc. Special attention is given to oral Irish. Classes are held each morning, Singing, Games, Leagues, Competitions, Swimming, Orienteering etc are organised in the afternoon. A Céilí is held each evening and is the social high point of the course. Other popular activities include Fancy Dress, Talent Competitions, Singing etc.

Facilities & Recreation

Games facilities include football pitch, tennis, basketball and volleyball court, swingball area, safe beach for swimming. Indoor facilities include table tennis tables, unihoc, playing cards, chess, draughts etc.
Students interested in table tennis should bring their own table tennis bats and balls.
Students reside in Dormitory Accommodation, Each student is provided with a single bunk bed.

Requirements

Individual clothing requirements are left to the discretion of the parents. However the following are essential:-

1 Duvet (single)/Sleeping Bag

2 Duvet Covers

2 Fitted Sheets

2 Pillow Covers

We strongly recommend:-

Rainwear, comfortable walking shoes or sports shoes, tracksuits, shorts and t-shirts, swimming togs and cap, Sock bag, large and small towels, soap etc

Hardcover copybook and biro

High factor sun lotion

All items should be clearly marked with students name. No responsibility can be accepted for personal belongings lost or left behind.

Health

The island nurse is available on specific days during the week should a student be taken ill. Where the College authorities deem it necessary a student will be taken to the doctor. In the case of serious illness every effort will be made to inform parents/guardians immediately.

Parents/guardians will be liable for any expense arising from a students illness

Rules

  • Irish is the language of the College and students must speak Irish at all times to the best of their ability
  • Students and visitors must obey the College Authorities
  • Students may not leave the College without informing the College Office
  • Smoking is not permitted. Possession of alcoholic drinks, drugs or solvents will result in instant expulsion
  • We advise parents to telephone as infrequently as possible, especially during the first few days of the course. The use of mobile phones is restricted. Camera phones are forbidden
  • Chewing gum is forbidden for reasons of hygiene, Aerosols are also forbidden
  • Hair Straighteners, Hair Dryers, Ipods/MP3,s and all electrical appliances are forbidden

Management reserves the right to dismiss a student whose conduct is unsatisfactory or who refuses to comply fully with the college rules and language policy.

Fees:-

Cúrsa A & Cúrsa B = € 900 Cúrsa C = € 725

A deposit of €150 is required with each application form

Balance of fee must be paid before the commencement of the course.

A Premium for Personal Accident Insurance is included in the fee.
